During this past year at Fall-Hamilton Elementary School, Meredith has grown her skill set in meeting the social and emotional learning needs of her students. She believes strongly in the power of positive relationships and utilizes a collaborative and trauma-informed approach to meeting students' needs. She facilitates restorative practices to build a positive classroom culture and teaches students how to understand and manage their emotions and behaviors. Meredith's classroom management strategies focus on relationships, skill building, setting clear expectations and logical consequences, and positive reinforcement.
Trauma-Informed teaching is at the forefront of Fall-Hamilton's mission as a progressive urban school in Nashville, TN. This mindset drives the core beliefs of teachers, staff, and families, and has had a profoundly positive impact on Meredith's experience as an educator.
Peace Corners provide students a safe space in the classroom to calm down, reflect on their emotions and behaviors, and regroup before rejoining class. Meredith utilizes this strategy in her classroom and has seen many positive benefits for her students learning and emotional well-being.
Check-In/Check-Out is a tier 2 behavior intervention strategy that capitalizes on trusting relationships among students and teachers. This system aims to help build emotional and behavioral skills in students while using data to best meet students needs.
Meredith utilizes this classroom management system that is based on building skills in students to manage their own emotions and behaviors, while setting clear expectations, and retaining student respect and accountability.
When students are having a difficult time demonstrating expected behaviors, they are invited to take a break in the peace corner and practice a de-escalation strategy. Student also complete a "Think Sheet" to reflect on what happened, the impact it had on others, and problem solve for how to solve it next time. This reflection is directly connected to the school PBIS behavior goals and expectations.
PBIS is an integral part of Meredith's classroom. Individual students and the class as a whole earn tickets for expected behaviors throughout each day. These tickets can be redeemed for individual and class rewards at the end of each week or semester.
